Education Research/Curriculum Development

Misconceptions Research

Professor Andrew Heckler (Department of Physics) will lead an innovative program to identify misconceptions in materials science and develop methods to address these misconceptions. This research will involve collecting data from introductory level materials courses through pre- and post-testing and student and faculty interviews.

Development

High School Materials Course Development

The Department of Materials Science is leading an effort to establish materials science courses at high schools throughout Ohio. CEM members will contribute to this effort by developing and editing content for a curriculum Wiki site and by developing/delivering an intensive "Introduction to Materials Science" course for high school teachers.

In addition, CEM members will be invited to participate in "Project Lead the Way," an event for middle school and high school students focusing on career awareness. Scientists and engineers will discuss their experiences and career path choices.

Undergraduate/Graduate/Post-doc Professional Development

CEM members will be encouraged to develop/deliver professional development workshops for graduate/undergraduate students (e.g. paper and proposal writing skills, seminar presentation skills).
