Crystal growth of novel materials”

Jiaqiang Yan
University of Tennessee/Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Abstract: The design, discovery, characterization and control of novel materials has been one important research topic in solid state community for decades. High quality single crystals enable the exploration of intrinsic and anisotropic properties, which are critical for understanding fundamental physics and designing new devices. In this seminar, I will outline the growth techniques that we use to grow single crystals of strongly correlated materials, and 2D materials beyond graphene and MX2. The interplay between superconductivity, structure, and magnetism in Mo3Sb7 will be presented as an example of our effort in understanding complex materials using single crystals.
