“Two Dimensional Electronics and Spin-Based Computers”

A first-hand account from the frontiers of modern electronics, where nanoscale circuits are built from layers of carbon a single atom thick and quantum effects rule the day.

Can you imagine electronic devices as thin as a single atomic layer? What about powerful new computer chips that take advantage of the electron’s spin, a quirky aspect of quantum mechanics that makes electrons into tiny magnets? How about studying relativistic physics in a table-top experiment? Once upon a time this had to be considered science fiction, but it is now becoming a reality at the forefront of nanoscale physics and nanotechnology research.

In this talk, Prof. Kawakami will tell you about the latest advances around the world and in his lab on two dimensional crystals, atomic sized electronics, and spin-based computing.
