Graduate students and postdocs supported by CEM research are part of a vibrant community designed to foster both scientific excellence and professional growth. Our comprehensive development framework prepares emerging scientists for successful careers while advancing the Center's research and outreach missions through meaningful engagement opportunities.
For Graduate Students and Postdocs
Internal Advisory Council
Student and postdoc voices are integral to CEM's continued success and evolution. Our Advisory Council, with representatives from each IRG and major research area, meets regularly with Center leadership to provide feedback, share experiences, and contribute to strategic planning. These structured dialogues ensure that student and postdoc perspectives directly influence Center policies, programs, and initiatives. This collaborative approach strengthens our research community and ensures that emerging scientists have meaningful input in shaping their educational and research environment.
Cross-MRSEC Events
The Center for Emergent Materials (CEM) is part of the NSF's national MRSEC (Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers) network at academic institutions across the U.S. MRSECs focus on high-quality, transdisciplinary materials research and education that addresses fundamental scientific and engineering challenges important to society.
CEM emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration by partnering with other MRSECs on joint events and activities. Notable initiatives include organizing Industry Consortium events that bring together multiple MRSECs to connect students with industry representatives and facilitate cross-program networking. CEM also participates in collaborative student workshops throughout the year, including the MRSEC Industry Consortium and MRSEC/PREM Student Conference, to strengthen the broader MRSEC community.
