Partnership for Research and Education in Materials

The Center for Emergent Materials (CEM) at The Ohio State University and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) have partnered through the NSF Partnership for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) program. Both institutions are committed to advancing materials research while increasing opportunities for underrepresented students. As minority-serving institutions with strong materials research programs, this partnership builds on our shared commitment to excellence in both research and expanding diversity in STEM fields.

Research

The Partnership Research Groups (PRG) include:

  • PRG-1: Topological Aspects of Magnetism
  • PRG-2: Quantum Materials for QIS in Reduced Dimensions
  • PRG-3: Biomolecule Topology and Props.

Broader Impacts

The CSULB-Ohio State Partnership impacts students and researchers from undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and faculty at both partner institutions:

  • Link two APS Bridge Program sites (Ohio State and CSULB)
  • Provide CSULB undergraduate students with research experiences
  • Create an Ohio State graduate student and postdoc exchange at CSULB
  • Expand CSULB faculty research programs and productivity
  • Increase Ohio State research collaborations and access to well-trained student pool
  • Create Opportunities for significant achievements for URM students
    • Thesis-based CSULB MS degrees
    • CSULB/Ohio State collaborative published papers with CSULB student authors
