Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates

Summer research opportunities in advanced materials science.

Join our NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at the Center for Emergent Materials. Selected students work alongside leading researchers to explore:

Research Areas

  • Design and synthesis of novel electronic and magnetic materials
  • Development of tools to control material properties at interfaces
  • Theoretical modeling of emergent phenomena
  • Crystal growth, thin films, and 2D materials

Program Benefits

  • One-on-one mentoring from faculty in Chemistry, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics
  • Professional development workshops focused on graduate school preparation and research careers
  • Networking opportunities and social activities with fellow researchers
  • Hands-on experience with experimental or computational research methods

Program Overview

This 10-week undergraduate research program offers:

  • $7,000 stipend
  • Housing accommodation (shared dorm room)
  • Travel cost reimbursement
  • Local bus transportation access

Application Requirements

Submit your application through NSF ETAP with:

  • Official undergraduate transcript
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Four written responses (200-500 words each):
    • Research Experience: Describe your previous laboratory work, research activities, and practical skills (e.g., electronics, computer programming)
    • Career Aspirations: Outline your post-Bachelor's degree plans and explain how your background and this REU program align with these goals
    • Research Interests: Detail your preferred research areas and potential projects. Review our faculty research - specifically IRG-1 and IRG-2 sections
    • Personal Journey: Share a significant challenge you've overcome and how the experience has prepared you for graduate studies in materials science

Eligibility

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate studies in:
    • Physics
    • Materials Science
    • Chemistry
    • Electrical/Computer Engineering

Important Dates

  • Priority Application Deadline: February 15
  • Summer 2025 Calendar: Coming Soon
