CEM kicks off the College of Arts and Sciences’ Science Sunday lecture series on September 20th, featuring Dr. Jeff Childress from HGST (Western Digital, formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies).
Title: Science and technology of data storage
Abstract: We take it for granted that in our information age all of our data needs to be stored somewhere, quickly, safely and reliably. Whether it is translated into tiny magnetic poles within hard disk drives, or into a few units of electric charge inside a silicon chip, the enormous amount of data storage required in our society relies on amazing scientific and technological progress in magnetism and nanofabrication. I will shed some light on today’s technology and on the challenges ahead.
