OSAA Fellows and Mentors Explore Materials Research at CEM (February 19, 2010)

The CEM introduced cutting-edge materials research to participants in the first mentoring event of 2010 for Ohio’s STEM Ability Alliance (OSAA), an NSF-funded Alliance for Students with Disabilities in STEM that works to increase the number of students with disabilities that complete STEM degrees. CEM Fellows Mike Hinton (Physics), Alex Holcomb (Materials Science and Engineering), and Trish Meyer (Chemistry) gave 14 undergraduate OSAA fellows and their mentors a first-hand view of pulsed laser deposition of thin films and shared the potential applications of IRG-2’s research into double perovskite interfaces and heterostructures.

CEM Announces New Proto-IRG Seed Grants

The Center for Emergent Materials (CEM) at the Ohio State University announces a new direction for the Seed Funding Program: Proto-IRG (Interdisciplinary Research Group) Seed Grants

The CEM is pleased to announce an exciting new direction for the Seed Funding Program: Proto-IRG Seed Grants. These awards are designed to support research by small interdisciplinary groups of 3 to 4 principal investigators (PIs) with the explicit intention of incubating the next generation of full IRGs (constituting 6-10 PIs) within 2 years. Awards will be up to $100,000 in direct costs per Proto-IRG per year.

The CEM, an NSF-funded MRSEC (Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers), is currently comprised of two Interdisciplinary Research Groups (IRGs). The idea behind incubating Proto-IRGs at this stage is to stimulate interdisciplinary research with the potential to develop into full-scale (IRGs) at the time of renewal of the CEM (June 2013). CEM announces new Internship Award Program

The Center for Emergent Materials announces the establishment of two new funding opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers: the CEM International Internship and the CEM Industrial Internship.

The aim of the Internship Award Program is to expand and to advance collaborative projects with international and industrial partners, and to provide incentive and opportunity to forge new partnerships. Successful applicants will receive up to $5,000 toward allowable costs of research on-site in the partner institution/industry facility.  Allowable costs include travel-related expenses (airfare, housing, etc), materials and supplies, and facility fees. Internships will be for a minimum of 4 weeks in duration. Continue reading
