DOD SMART Scholarship Awarded to Brandi Wooten

Congratulations to CEM graduate researcher Brandi Wooten for winning a SMART (Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation) Scholarship from the Department of Defense.

Brandi will be assigned to the Army Research Lab (ARL) – Sensors and Electronic Devices Directorate (SEDD) in Adelphi, MD. She will spend her summers there (beginning in 2022) until she graduates. Afterwards, she will will work there for as many years as they fund her (~2 years).  They make materials atom by atom (a process known as molecular beam epitaxy), then they ship the samples to her where she measures the topological electronic and magnetic properties. Through the scholarship program, she will develop both skillsets, which will be great for future employment opportunities.

[UMAAC] Social for South Asians in Astronomy and Physics

Astronomy and Physics Departments,

I’m the chair of UMAAC, the undergraduate majors of astronomy and astrophysics committee. We plan events and seek to improve the climate and overall experience of astronomy undergraduates.

I’m reaching out to gauge interest about a social for South Asians in astronomy/physics. This would be an informal event geared towards connecting South Asian undergraduate, graduate students, and faculty.

Feel free to reach out to me (admane.1@buckeyemail.osu.edu) or co-chair Avidaan Srivastava (srivastava.172@osu.edu) for any questions and/or to confirm your interest or support for this social.

Thank you!

“Physics is Beautiful” App Wins 2016 Student Project Grant from TechHub

Physics Ph.D. candidates Nicolas Scozzaro and Hiran Wijesinghe were awarded a 2016 Student Project Grant from Tech Hub for their app, “Physics is Beautiful.” The award is a $2,000 grant to continue developing their project: an interactive website/app of physics lessons presented in a game-like environment. Scozzaro approached the Center to request minor/administrative support to get the collaborative idea off the ground, and CEM is proud to have supported their innovative and successful idea.
